"Paradise No" Petition

For those of you who haven't come across this yet, there is an online petition to request the Academy Awards not to award the film Paradise Now.

The petition includes excerpts of a letter written by the father of a young man killed by a suicide bomber.

There has also been a request to post the link to the petition on as many web sites as possible, so that it will show up on search engines.

If you haven't signed yet, please do. If you have a blog, please link to it.

Incidentally I do have a post to this blog on my website...and i understand the request, but I think it is non-productive...it will create more buzz for the movie...

It opens up dialogue, which is good but the academy will not un-nominate it.

rc - I think that the movie will receive publicity no matter what. But it is a good idea to "push back" at the media, and in this case, Hollywood. I don't think they will withdraw the nomination, but perhaps they will not give it an award.

I have to agree with RC. And while I concur with one very salient point the bereaved father makes in his letter (about how this would not have even been looked at if it was a film about the 9/11 Suicide Bombers) I still fear this petition will do more harm than good...

the artist - sometimes you have to take a stand, even if there is little chance that you will win.

Except that it isn't clear what this "stand" is for. If this was actually a film which glorifies suicide bombing, then I'd be the first to sign a petition to ban it... Anyway, you know what I think.

the artist - you saw the film and say that it does not, indeed, glorify suicide bombers, and perhaps you are 100 percent right. The problem is that most people will not actually see the film (hopefully!) but will think that it is a film that glorifies suicide bombers, and that it was nominated for an Oscar.

That is why I think it is important to try to stop it from receiving the award.
